Vladimir Nicolae Voronin (May 25th 1941, Corjova, District of Dubăsari -) is a Moldavian politician, president of the République of Moldavie in exercise since the April 7th 2001. He is also the chief of the greatest party of Moldavie, the Parti the Communists of the Republic of Moldavie (PCRM).

In 1994, after the disappearance of the the USSR, Voronin becomes the first secretary of the Party of the Communists of the Republic of Moldavie, the heir to the Communist party of the old Soviet socialist Republic of Moldavie. In 1998, it is elected appointed at the Parliament of the Republic of Moldavie.

After the legislative elections of 2001, Voronin is elected president by the Moldavian Parliament the April 4th and is invested on April 7th.

Politically, president Voronin wished a bringing together of the Republic of Moldavie, economically very weak, with the Fédération of Russia.

He is strongly opposed to those which, among the Rumanian majority of the country (75% according to the last census), would like a bringing together political and economic, even a unification with the Romania. Voronin is shown very critical of Romania at the time of its short speeches (qualifying Rumanian of Romania in August 2005 of fascistic invaders ). At the time of its first mandate, Voronin reintroduced the obligatory teaching of the Russian at the school and given more administrative laws to the Bulgarian minority of the Republic of Moldavie. He also seeks a statute of autonomy reinforced for the Transnistrie Russian speaker and encourages the historians of the country has to find evidence on the existence of people and a Moldavian language distinct from Rumanian.

Recently, the evolution of the political situation in Ukraine convinced Voronin to change course with 180° and to seek the establishment of a partnership between the Republic of Moldavie and the European Union. It even accepted a meeting in 2005 with the president of Romania Traian Basescu.

Following the relative majority obtained by PCRM at the time of the legislative elections of the March 6th 2005, the Moldavian Parliament renews Voronin in its president's functions at the time of a vote the April 4th 2005 with 75 votes out of 101, with the voices of part of the opposition, trustful in the promises of democratic opening towards the West.

Note: The transcription of the name of Voronin does not comply with the rules of transcription of Russian to French because it is the Rumanian name who is used. The orthography is thus the same one as in French.
