Vladimir Drinfeld

Vladimir Guerchonovitch Drinfeld (ВладимирГершоновичДринфельд) is a Mathématicien born the February 14th 1954 in Ukraine.

With the international Olympiads of mathematics of 1969, at the 15 years age, it gained, with a perfect score, a gold medal for the the USSR. It entered then to the Université.

In 1986, it animated seminar to Congress international of mathematics to Berkeley, where it invented the term “quantum Groupe” in reference to the Algèbre of Hopf which was deformations of the simple algebras of Dregs, and connected their study to the equation of Yang-Baxter, which is a requirement for the solubility of the models in Mécanique statistics.

It generalized also the concept of Algèbre of Hopf in that of Algèbre quasi-Hopf and introduced the study of torsions of Drinfeld, which can be employed to factorize the R-matrix corresponding to the solution of the equation of Yang-Baxter related to a quasi-triangular Algèbre of Hopf.

It was rewarded by the Médaille Fields in 1990. He is currently professor emeritus of the Université of Chicago
