Vladikavkaz
Vladikavkaz (bone.: Дзæуджыхъæу; rus.: Владикавка́з) is the capital of the Ossétie of North, Russia.
It is located in the south-east of the republic at the foot of the mountains of the the Caucasus on the Terek river. Its population made up of Ossètes, Russians, Armenians and Georgiens is of approximately 312 000 (in 2001).
The city was founded in 1784 like a fort at the time of the Russian conquest of the Caucasus and during many years was principal Russian military base in the area. The North-South main road built at the beginning of the 19th century passes there, and later the line of Railroad which connects it to Rostov-sur-le-Don and Bakou in Azerbaïdjan. Vladikavkaz became an important in particular iron and steel industrial center for the area.
Of 1931 with 1944 and of 1954 with 1990 one gave him the name of Ordjonikidze in the honor of the leader Bolchevik; from 1944 to 1954 it was called Dzaudjkau before taking again its name which means “queen of the Caucasus”.
In February 1919, the city was taken by the army of the volunteers anticommunist of Anton Ivanovitch Dénikine which was driven out by it by the Red Army in March 1920. In November 1942 the forces Nazi be tried without success to take the city. It was the point more in the east in Russia where they arrived.
