Vittorio Bottego (born with Parma in 1860, died in Ethiopia in 1897) was a Officier army Italy (lieutenant of artillery) and one of the first explorers of the Jubaland (today in Somalia), where it carried out two forwardings.
During its first forwarding in 1892 - 1893, it explores the areas bordered by the rivers Uebi and Jmi and reached cliffs of the Faches mounts. At the time of the second (1895 - 1897), he ventures in the area then still unknown haut-Juba, lake Rodolphe and of Sobat, along the river Omo. He tries to return while passing through the Ethiopian empire, then in war against Italy. He finds death in a skirmish with members of a tribe Oromo. Its forever found body and its last forwarding were told by his/her travelling companions, Vannutelli and Citerni, which after having survived the battle, were kept in prison during two years by the négus of Ethiopia Ménélik II.
Bottego wrote two books after its first forwarding: Viaggi di scoperta nel cuore dell' Africa (1895) and the esplorazione del Giuba (1895). Vannutelli and Citerni wrote Seconda spedizione Bottego: Omo (1899).
