Viti Levu

Viti Levu is largest of the islands of the Fiji. It concentrates approximately 75% of the population for a surface of 10  388km ², 146km of is in west on 106 of north in the south. It is by its size, the troisème island of the Pacifique after the Grande Hawai' I and the Large Earth (New Caledonia). The island gathers principal the center urban of the Archipel with while following the coast since the capital Suva in the direction of the needles of the watch: Sigatoka; Nadi; Lautoka; Tavua and Nausori On the géo-climatic level, the island is divided into three

  • the coast with the wind in the east where the capital is located. It reigns there a particularly wet climate because of its exposure to the dominant winds (the Alizés).
  • the lee shore as for it drier and sunny. Are there the international airport and the second city of the country, Nadi, at 3 hours of roads of Suva (by the southern part). It is on this coast that are the majority of the fields of Canne at sugar, essential resource of the Fijian economy. It is also home base towards the islands of the Archipel of Yasawa which concentrate the principal tourist infrastructures.
  • the center of Viti Levu more mountainous, culminates with approximately 1100 meters of altitude (Tomaniivi mount). Isolated and from more difficult access, the roads are only seldom tarred there and not very practicable during the rain season. The life mode is more traditional there, the horse remaining the most used means of transport.
