The Visconti are a family of Noble S of Lombardy in Italy, left gibelin, which reigned on the duchy of Milan during the Moyen-âge until the Renaissance, 1277 with 1447. They carried the title of lord then, as from 1395, in the person of Jean Galéas, that of duke of Milan . With died of the last duke, Philippe Marie, in 1447, the République Ambrosienne was founded in the city for one period of less than three years.

However, the succession viscontienne in Milan was ensured by Blanche Marie, girl of Philippe Marie which married François Sforza, the Condottiere which will take again the torch of the duchy in 1550. Their heraldic weapons were a Guivre, fantastic creature, in fact a drawn up snake and ondoyant, absorbing a child.

The last famous descendants of the family are the directors Luchino and Eriprando Visconti.

    1. Otton (Ottone), (1207 - 1295), archbishop of Milan in 1262; it seized the power in 1277.

        1. Mathieu I {{er}} (Matteo), (1250 - 1322), great nephew of Otton, lord of Milan of 1291 with 1302 and of 1317 with 1322, imperial vicar of Lombardy in 1294
          1. Galéas I {{er}} (Galeazzo), born in 1277, died in Pescia in 1328, lord of Milan, wire of Mathieu I {{er}}, which yielded the capacity in to him 1320. The emperor Louis IV of Bavaria made it imprison in 1327.
            1. Azzon (Azzone), born with Ferrare in 1302, died in 1339, wire of Galéas I {{er}}; general lord of Milan of 1330 with 1339, of which it increases the possessions (Bergamo, Plaisance, Brescia). It obtains, in 1329, from the emperor the title of imperial vicar for Milan.
          2. Lucien (Luchino), born in 1292, died in 1349, lord of Milan, uncle and successor of Azzon of 1339 with 1349. It acquired Parma, Locarno and Alexandria.
          3. Jean (Giovanni), born in 1290, died in 1354, lord of Milan, brother of Lucien; he annexed Bologna and was protective of Pétrarque. Its three nephews shared the State.

            1. Mathieu II (Matteo II), born towards 1319, died in 1355, nephew of Jean; he was assassinated by his brothers.
            2. Galéas II (Galeazzo II), born towards 1320, died in Pavia in 1378, nephew of Jean.
              1. Jean Galéas (Gian Galeazzo), born in 1351, died in Melegnano in 1402, succeeded Barnabé and extended the Milanese to Vicence, Vérone, Padoue and Bologna, being made name duke of Milan in 1395 and Lombardy in 1397.
                1. Valentine , born in 1368, died in 1408, wife of Louis of Orleans.
                2. Jean Marie (Giovanni Maria), born in 1389, died in 1412, wire and successor of Jean Galéas, it divided the duchy with his/her brother Philippe Marie.
                3. Philippe Marie (Filippo Maria), born in 1392, died in 1447, wire and successor of Jean Galéas with his brother Jean Marie. He left the duchy to his natural daughter Blanche Marie
                  1. Blanche Marie (Bianca Maria), born in 1424, died in 1468, wife of François Sforza.
            3. Barnabe (Bernabò), born in 1323, died in 1385, nephew of Jean; he was undoubtedly poisoned by his nephew, Jean Galéas
              1. Valentine , born in 1361, died in 1393, girl of Barnabe and wife of Pierre II, king of Cyprus
