Visby is a town of 22.017 inhabitants, founded at the 10th century, on the island then independent of Gotland in the Baltic, henceforth Swedish. Administratively, Visby is the residence of the Governor of the Comté of Gotland. There is also an elected local town council. It is the chief town of the Commune of Gotland. In contemporary Sweden, Visby is especially known for its stone wall, practically intact, 3,4 kilometers length which surrounds the old city. The wall is called “Ringmuren”, which means circular wall. The city is sometimes affectionately called “city of the pinks”, denomination disputed with other Swedish old cities.

History

Gotland was integrated into Sweden at the 17th century after 300 years of Danish occupation . Between the XIIe and the 14th century, Visby was an important center of the Hanseatic League. During the Christianization of the countries of the Baltic, around the time of the creation of Rīga towards 1200, Visby became the protective one about it.
