Some definitions
The appearance of new technologies made it possible the Musée S to exploit them at ends of safeguarding and conservation of the inheritance. Cédérom and DVD-Romanian is thus reflected to replace the Microfilm S and Microfiche S, offering to the museums a simplified use but also a quality and a storage capacity definitely higher than those their predecessors. Then new media were born, opening new possibilities of exploitation: the Internet.
Gilles Deleuze defines the virtual word as “any problematic field likely to establish bonds between seemingly foreign objects or processes the ones with the others: the virtual one is entirely real even if all in him is not updated” (Deloche, 2001). Thus, the virtual one would be another manner of existing, opposite with the current one. It is not about possible but would be an imperceptible certainty. Indeed, from its existence even, the virtual bring into play of the data, unquestionable and exploitable information, however those are intangible because immaterial. They exist, certainly, but are untouchable, impalpable.
The virtual museum thus concerns this same definition coupled to that of the institution muséale. It would be thus an intangible institution accessible to the public and making research concerning the material witnesses from the man and his environment, preserving them (in particular by the digitalization of the collections), diffusing them and communicating them and exposing them (through virtual exposures) in particular at ends of education, research and dialog with the sensitive one.
According to Genevieve Vidal, the virtual museum constitutes a reference to the real museum, “it presents exposures, resulting from exposures real or conceived exclusively to be put in network or on optical disk, of information on the activities of the museum, the articles, the cards of reading on works. ” It can “be managed by the traditional actors of the museums, but also by the persons in charge of the tourist services of the cities seeking to develop their inheritance, or impassioned individuals”.
Missions of the virtual museum
The virtual museum can have also various missions, in particular of teaching and diffusion of the culture, but also of output and promotion, and finally of the properly political objectives.
