Viromanduens
The Viromanduens , Viromands, Viromandues, Vermandois: in Latin, Viromandui or Veromandui (the ancient inscriptions privilege the C-W communication in - I; in the ancient copies of texts, the two forms are indifferently attested).
César mentions the Viromandui with three recoveries: '' Bello Gallico '', II, 4,6, II, 16,2 and II, 23,4; one finds Viromanduos , in the Periochia 104 drawn from Tite-Live, Ab Urbe condita ; Veromandui in Pline, Natural history , IV, 106; Virmandus in the Notes tironiennes . 87,56; Ουιρομανδυες or Ρομανδυες in Ptolémée, II, 9,6; Veromandi in Orose, VI, 7,1; the civitas Veromandorum appears in the Notitia Galliarum VI, 5.
Celtic People Belgian which remained in the Vermandois and gave its name to Vermand.
It occupied is basin of the Sum, to the high valley of Oise. Évêché of Vermandois, heir to the civitas Viromanduorum , was completely dissociated during the creation of the departments. Its territory coincides approximately: in Aisne, with the district of Saint-Quentin (except most of the canton of Ribemont), plus the cantons of Chauny, Tergnier, Fère partly; in the Sum, with the district of Fibula (except part of the canton of Bray-on-Nap and the canton of Albert) and left the cantons Roye and Rosière; in Oise, with the cantons of Boundary-line, Guiscard and started from that of Lassigny.
Certain authors supposed that their territory extended to Thiérache: this assumption is not shown.
The Viromandui appear in the history with the Guerre of Gaules of César. They take part, into 57 before J. - C., with the coalition of the Belgians, then are again mentioned a little after, at the time of a battle close to the river Sabis (discussed localization), where they face at the sides of the Nerviens (Bavay - Hainaut) and of the Atrebates (Arras - Artois), the army of César. Their bravery puts in danger the Roman army which, however, ends up carrying it.
Their principal Oppidum is Vermand. Their capital during the High-Empire is Augusta Viromanduorum - Saint-Quentin. Vermand seems to be become again their chief town at the Lower Empire. To the Life century, the episcopal see is transferred to Noyon.
