Policy

TheWestern one is traditionally a rather democratic State and progressist.

With the presidential elections, it is rare that a democratic candidate did not carry the presidency without to have gained theWestern one. It is necessary to go back to Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to find a democrat elected with the presidency but beaten in this state by its adversary.

Between 1960 and 2000, the democrats gained the State with each presidential election except in 1972 and 1984, years of the electoral tidal waves of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

But since 2000, the State carried out a political turn rather clearly towards the line, at least at the national level. It gave for the 1st time, with 2 presidential elections of continuation, in 2000 and 2004, the victory with the republican candidate George W. Bush by granting to him 51% then 56% of its votes.

The governor of the State is the democratic Joe Manchin, since January 2005.

Among the other elected stations of the executive, only the Secretary of State is republican.

With the local congress, at the time of the legislature 2007 - 2008, the Lower House of 100 members is controlled by 72 democratic representatives and the senate of 34 seats by 23 Democratic senators.

At the federal level, the 2 senators are Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller, both democrats.

Robert Byrd is the senior of the senators. Former member of the Ku Klux Klan, suspected of preserving racist feelings, it is not less one of the democrats on the left of the Congress, and illustrated himself for it recently while being opposed to the Patriot Act and the Guerre in Iraq. The State is also represented by 2 democrats and a republican with the Chambre of the representatives.

Economy

Crossed by the chain of the the Appalachian Mountains, which accounts for approximately the 2/3 of the surface of the State, theWestern one is the poorest area of the United States.
