Viral load

The viral load makes it possible to quantify the number of copies of a Virus (HIV, VHB…) in a volume of fluid (blood, sperm, saliva…) given.

It is generally expressed in copies per millilitre, or of course a logarithmic scale.

Within the framework of HIV, the measurement of the viral load is interesting to decide when to start a treatment at a patient Séropositif or for the follow-up of a patient already treated. A undetectable viral load (lower than 50 copies/ml) is the objective to be reached.
