Viperinae
The Viperinae , called simply vipers , form a subfamily Serpent S poisonous which includes/understands roughly 150 Espèce S.
Distribution
The viper is present in almost all the areas of the world. The North-East of the North America belongs to the places which does not count any species of it.
Use in pharmacy
In addition to their use in the preparation of the Thériaque, one considered at the 17th century that the flesh of viper was the best antidote with the envenimations caused by this species or others. Ignorance around their biology made of it true Panacée S.Some Doctor S or Pharmacist S of this time, as Brace Charas which publishes a rather serious study on their subject in 1670, had made their speciality of it.
It is probably Francesco Redi (1626-1697) which, one of the first, showed how the venom of the viper was injected and that it was secreted by a gland located in the head of the animal.
The venom of viper is sometimes used in pharmaceutical preparations aiming at dissolving a possible stopper of Cérumen.
The Ancrod is an extract of venom of a viper of Malaysia (Calloselasma rhodostoma) having an important anticoagulant activity by fast destruction of the Fibrinogène, protein intervening in the formation of the clots. The ancrod was tested in various diseases and seem to have a certain effectiveness in the cerebral vascular accidents taken very precociously.
