The vineyard of the Muscadet wine is a vineyard of the Val-de-Loire which produces dry white wines. This vineyard, classified AOC since 1937 (last modifications by the decree of the September 19th 2001), covers a surface of 13.000 hectares in the south of Nantes in the department of the Loire-Atlantique. It overflows on the departments of Maine-et-Loire and the the Vendée.

The wines of the Muscadet wine are vinified in dry white starting from a single type of vine, the melon (called Muscadet locally, one also finds it under the melon denominations of Burgundy, gamay of Burgundy or musky melon). The denomination on binds (or on dregs ) can be added to name. In this case, the wines must have past only one winter out of barrel or tanks and be still on their dregs of fermentation at the time of the setting out of bottle which is located between on March 1st and the June 30th or between the October 15th and the November 30th

The vineyard of the Muscadet wine comprises several names:

  • the Muscadet wine-Slopes of the Loire , defined by the decree of the November 14th 1936, covers a surface of 500 hectares out of 24 communes. It is a dry wine rather vigorous, nervous, maturing well out of bottle.
  • the Muscadet wine-Coasts of Grandlieu , defined by the decree of the December 29th 1994. This vineyard draws its originality from the microclimate of the Lake Grandlieu. Name covers a surface of 600 hectares out of 19 communes, including 2 located in the Vendée.
  • the Muscadet wine-Separates and Maine , defined by the decree of the October 9th 1995, covers a surface of 10.000 hectares out of 23 communes. It represents more than 80% of the production of the Muscadet wine.

Discusses Breton wine

Two vine growers of Loire-Atlantique took the initiative, in 2006, to create an assembly in " Wine of Pays" that they named “Breton wine” and to affix on their bottles a bilingual label (French Breton).

The administration of the repression of the frauds deposited felt sorry for in front of the prosecutor of Nantes for “attempt at fraud and labelling nonin conformity”, then on December 20th, 2006 the Parquet floor of the TGI of Nantes, decided during the second penal composition not to give following the complaint.
