Vineyard of Bergerac
The vineyard of Bergerac extends in the department from the the Dordogne (south-western of France), around the town of Bergerac, on 93 communes. 1.200 wine growers cultivate a surface of 12.000 ha. It produces 13 AOC, of the reds, the marrowy and liqueur-like white, the dry white and the rosy ones.
The name of Bergerac would come from “ Bragayrac ”, derived from the Gallic braca manufacturer of braies (full pants of Gallic).
Henri III of England, Charles de Valois, brother of Philippe Beautiful the and Frederic II of Prussia provided out of barrels wines of Bergerac. Rabelais quotes the “ softnesses suaves ” of the wines of Saussignac and Michel de Montaigne liked the white of Montravel. At the 14th century, the wines of Bergerac, could be distinguished by affixing a griffon and a tower on the Fût S, like marks recognition.
The nature of the grounds resembles that of Saint-émilion, mixture of gravels, Argile S and Calcaire S.
The red are assembled starting from Cabernet-sauvignon, of Cabernet-franc and Merlot, Côt (local Auxerrois), or Malbec; they often have a dark color, a generous bouquet and vigorous savors.
The white are assembled starting from the type of vines Sémillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle, Ondenc and Chenin.
