Vincenzo Campi
Vincenzo Campi (Casement bolt, 1536 - 1591) is an Italian painter and the younger brother and the pupil of Giulio Campi and Antonio Campi and the son of Galeazzo Campi.
Biography
Vincenzo had an ambivalent career of painter, by his choice at the same time to paint retables of a sensitivity committed in the Counter-Reformation (of the archbishop Carlo Borromeo) in Lombardy, and on an unforeseeable famous burlesque side in its scenes of kind, inhabited popular, grotesque and caricatural faces and women provocantes and blinking eye, inspired of the mode of painting fiamande, responsible for erotic significances. These works met a certain success among its silent partners, between whom the rich person Bavarian patron Hans Fugger (a series of tables of Vincenzo Campi must be counted, going back to the years 1580 and 1581, are preserved today at the castle of Kirchheim) and which joins again partly in the similar searches of direction naturalist by painting bolonaise (Bartolomeo Passarotti and Annibale Carracci). Its career proceeds particularly in Crémone, but it leaves works with Milan, Pavia and Busseto. Its first documented works are located with the decoration of the dome of Casement bolt, a Pietà in the room of Capitole and a series Prophets in the nave. In the Christ in cross of Chartreuse of Pavia, it yields with the requirements of the atmosphere of solemn dramatization requested from the artists in the years of the Counter-Reformation when it was required for them to give to the sacred art feelings of pathos to inspire strong a devotion with the faithful ones. Between 1586 and 1589, its more important Milanese work, painted in collaboration with his/her brother Antonio, on the vault of the church San Paolo Converso, is painted with spectacular prospects in Trompe-l'oeil. In 1588, Vincenzo paints a very beautiful San Matteo in Pavia, whose realism was read by the critic Roberto Longhi like an important precedent of the painting of the Caravage.
