Saint Vincent of Paul , born at the village of Pouy close to Dax the April 24th 1581 - died the September 27th 1660, is famous for its charity, which he exerted in particular near the galériens - of which he was Aumônier -, of the found children and the peasants ignoramuses. Chaplain of the queen Margot, wife of Henri IV, then country priest with Clichy, tutor of the children of Philippe de Gondi.

Biography

Born in Pouy (current Saint-Vincent-of-Paul), close to Dax, under the name of Depaul, in 1581. Wire of a peasant of Gascogne, Vincent of Paul experienced as of his childhood the most stripped conditions of existence of. After studies of theology to Dax and Toulouse, it is ordered priest in 1600, at the 19 years age, Castle-the Bishop in the Dordogne.

Probably captured in 1605 by pirates while going Marseilles to Narbonne, he escapes from Tunis at the conclusion two years of imprisonment, then becomes priest of parish and tutor in the family of Gondi.

General chaplain of the galères in 1619. He becomes the superior of the first Parisian monastery about the Visitation Sainte-Marie after the death of François Dirty, in 1622.

Thanks to the financial support of Madam de Gondi, it founded, in 1625, the Congrégation of the Mission. Dedicated to the evangelization of the poor of the campaigns, the congregation will take the name of Lazaristes when it settles in the old Saint-Lazare priory in Paris, in 1632. Vincent of Paul, who will train many priests, creates a seminar of the Mission. The first Lazariste S will be sent to Madagascar in 1648.

In 1633, it founds the Compagnie of the Girls of Charity. The Girls of Charity, also called Sisters of Vincent saint of Paul , are dedicated to the service of the patients and the body and spiritual service of the poor; he entrusts the formation of it to Louise de Marillac. This institution at the origin of the Hôpital of Child-Is found the of Paris.

Vincent also organizes collections in Paris to carry help to the victims of the wars of religion. Although member of the Company of the Blessed Sacrament, it preaches for moderation with regard to the Protestants, then is opposed to the Jansénisme.

He still founds an old people's home for the old men, which will become the Hôpital of Salpêtrière in 1657. Louis XIII invited it to die in its arms.

Deceased the September 27th 1660, Vincent is proclaimed Saint by the pope Clément XII, the June 16th 1737.
