The business Vincent Humbert posed in France once more the problem of the Euthanasie.

After a serious road accident, on September 24th, 2000, the Vincent Humbert young person became tetraplegic. Not supporting more this life without hope of cure, he takes many steps to obtain the right to be euthanasia, until writing to President Jacques Chirac which he asks for a “right of die”.

Chronology

  • September 24th 2000: Vincent is making victim of a serious road accident, it blind man, dumb man and tetraplegic, but keeping all his clearness. He is then hospitalized in the center photogravure-sailor of Berck.
  • November 2002: Thanks to his functional transportation routes (hearing and right inch), Vincent using his stimulating Chantal writes his request of “right to die” to the President of the Republic, in order to shorten his sufferings and those which it perceives in his mother.
  • September 21st 2003: His/her mother, Marie Humbert, announce her intention to help it.
  • September 24th, 2003: Marie Humbert passes to the act, giving him important amounts of Pentobarbital of sodium. Vincent Humbert enters a major Coma and is then allowed in the intensive care unit of Dr. Frederic Chaussoy. Marie Humbert is immediately stopped and placed as a police custody.
  • September 25th, 2003: The book of Vincent Humbert I ask for the right to you of die is published. Marie Humbert is released from her police custody.
  • September 26th, 2003: After discussion and agreement with the family, Dr. Chaussoy decides to adopt any measure of reanimation and to inject potassium chloride, involving the death of his patient.
  • January 13rd and 14th 2004: Dr. Chaussoy and Marie Humbert is put in examination, the first for “premeditated poisoning” and the second for “toxic substance administration”. The two marked ones assumed always their act and caused an ethical and legislative debate on the topic of the Euthanasie, leading to the adoption of a “right to let die” by the French Parliament in April 2005. A withdrawal of case was delivered in February 2006 on this business by the examining magistrate Anne Morvant.
  • September 24th, 2004: Marie Humbert fights with association Faut that one activates oneself! to obtain the de-penalization of the exception of euthanasia in France. It launches a petition thus: the “law Vincent Humbert”. This one collected nearly 300.000 signatures of citizens.
  • autumn 2004: Jean Leonetti, doctor and deputy of the the Alpes-Maritimes, is charged by President Jacques Chirac and the Gouvernement Raffarin with a “Parliamentary mission on the accompaniment with the end of life”, of a project of Relative law to the rights of the patients and the end-of-life filed in with the National Assembly on October 26th, 2004.
  • the Relative law with the rights of the patients and the end-of-life n° 2005-370 is adopted by the Parliament on April 22nd, 2005.

  • on November 29th, 2007: The newspaper " Parisen" publish an interview of Herve Messager, masseur-kinesitherapist of Vincent Humbert in whom he deplores the lies and the meditisation of this business as well as the loneliness of his mother, Marie Humbert.

Adaptation on television

A telefilm, Marie Humbert was diffused on December 3rd, 2007 on TF1, carried out by Marc Angélo, in which one finds Florence Pernel in the role of the mother.
