Vincent Descombes is a contemporary Philosophe French, born in 1943. It is pointed out with the same one and the other , panorama of the French philosophy of Kojève with often critical Foucault (in particular towards phenomenology). Since the Eighties, which mark its analytical turning, the essence of its work relates to the Philosophie language, the Philosophie of the spirit and the Philosophie of the action. It is in particular known for its critic of the Cognitivisme from the point of view resulting from Wittgenstein. Its recent research relates to the nature and the specificity of the social relations.

It tries by its books to answer two questions which tap it since its entry in the world of philosophy: is

  • Which the role of the philosopher of modern times? does
  • In what consist the reality of the relationship between individuals and company?

The first question, he answers that the role of the philosopher is to help his contemporaries with better including/understanding the newspaper of today. And the second, he answers that the individual is a social agent capable of a relative normative autonomy in so far as he gives himself the means of them.

To summarize the matter of its last three works, Descombes tries, thanks to the concept of institution (inspired of that of rule at Wittgenstein), to think of new expenses

  1. the Holisme: to hold good against a methodological Individualism nominalist, but without him to oppose the solutions of the Structuralism;
  2. freedom and autonomy, in morals as in policy: to avoid the metaphysics difficulties of the traditional concept of autoposition thanks to the contemporary philosophy of the action.
Fitting once more in the tradition wittgensteinienne, Descombes preaches for philosophical method and metaphysics a rigorous examination of the conditions of significance of the words which we employ.

Vincent Descombes is member of the CRPRA (Research center policies Raymond Aron), created in February 1992 by the École of the High Studies in Social sciences.
