He leaves in fifth position at 43 seconds the German Sven Fischer following the results recorded at the time of the Sprint 10km four days earlier. Defrasne signs one 15 out of 15 at the time of these the first three passages to the shooting, returning in third position, in the wake of Ole Einar Bjørndalen, to about thirty seconds behind Fischer, then also author of one without fault to the shooting. At the time of the ultimate passage to the shooting, Fischer makes three errors, Defrasne two and Bjørndalen one, which comes to be added to two errors during shootings 2 and 3. Defrasne leaves thus at the head the launching pad with Bjørndalen in its trace and Fischer in ambush to ten seconds. Well quickly, Bjørndalen returns on Defrasne, which is then satisfied to follow the Norwegian. While the German tries an impossible return, the victory disputes with the sprint between the French and the Norwegian. Defrasne avoids little the fall at the time of the last turn, and Bjørndalen benefits from it to take a few meters in advance with three hundred meters of the finishing line. But Defrasne returns, and increases its attack to hundred meters of the line, leaving Bjørndalen on the spot, able to retort more.

A few days later, it takes part in the French relay which gains a new bronze medal, medal obtained of a few centimetres by Raphaël Poirée.
