Vincennes (Indiana)
Vincennes is a city and sits of the Comté of Knox in the State of the Indiana to the the United States whose population was of 18 701 inhabitants in 2000.
It is the oldest city of Indiana, established in 1732. It at the time a Trading post French, was thus named in the honor of François-Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes. Renamed Strong Sackville by the British, it revolted in 1778, was overcome by the British troops of Detroit, then taken again by George Rogers Clark the February 23rd 1779. Vincennes formed successively part of the French Louisiana, the British colony of the Canada, the County of Illinois of the the Commonwealth of Virginia, the County of Knox of the Territoire of the North-West, the Territoire of Indiana and finally of the same county of Knox of the State of Indiana.
Vincennes was the place of residence of the 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison, which lived there, in his residence of Grouseland. It is also the birthplace of Sarah Knox Taylor, girl of the 12th President of the United States Zachary Taylor and marries Jefferson Davis.
