Vimioso

Vimioso is a municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Bragance and the Northern area.

Demography

Apart from the seat of the municipality (locality of Vimioso) and of Argoselo or Argozelo where the services concentrate (administration, banks, trade,…), Vimioso is a farming community whose population carries on primarily agricultural activities. The very strong emigration - especially bound for the Brazil until the beginning of the year 1960 then towards the close Europe (France, Spain,…) - and, nowadays, the rural migration towards Bragance or the metropolises of the littoral (Oporto, Lisbon) explains the dramatic depopulation of the area which the turning into a desert watches for. The population which remainder is from now on made up as a majority of elderly.

Languages

In addition to Portuguese, part of the population speaks the Mirandais in some villages about the East about the municipality (Angueira, Caçarelhos and, especially, Vilar Seco). Mirandais, the number of speakers is estimated at 15  000, is mainly spoken in the municipality close to Miranda C Douro. Second official language of Portugal, mirandais it is an alternative of the Asturien spoken in North about Spain.
