Vilvorde

Vilvorde (in Dutch: Vilvoorde ) is a common city and Dutch-speaking of Belgium located in Flemish Région in the Province of the Flemish Brabant.

City of almost 37.000 inhabitants, it is located at the north of the Région of Brussels-Capital, along the Ship canal of Brussels to the Scheldt.

Located in area Flemish but bordering on Brussels-city (Neder-Over-Heembeek), Vilvorde comprises a French-speaking minority represented by several elected officials (on lists of the democratic Front of the French-speaking people, FDF) at the town council (3 out of 31 in 2000,2 in 1994,3 in 1988,4 in 1982 and 1976). It counts two important immigrant minorities in addition, one of Moroccan origin, the other of Spanish origin. On the whole, an inhabitant on approximately five is of nationality or foreign origin (Morocco, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, Portugal).

Its current burgomaster (2005) is the former first Belgian minister Jean-Luc Dehaene, of the party Flemish Christian-Democrat CD&V, with the head of a coalition between CD&V (10 seats), SP.A (4 seats) and Groen! (1 seat), supported by 2 of the 3 French-speaking elected officials who were excluded from FDF for this support (one of them currently sits for the CDH, the other joined group CD&V).
