Geography

History

Villers Bretonneux was the site of one of the tragedies episodes of the Bataille of the Sum in 1916. Thousands of Australian soldiers and Néozélandais of the ANZAC, which had come to reinforce manpower of the British Army, there died, to have succeeded in resisting the offensive of the German Empire. An imposing memorial was drawn up in the north of the commune, on a site containing several thousands of white crosses. The commune also pays homage to the sacrifice of the Australiens soldiers in the " museum of the Australien" soldier; , which was installed on the first floor of the elementary school, in the court of which a simple banner recalls each day to the visitors and to the pupils: " don' T forget Australia". The reconstuction of this school, in the years 1920, was financed by the inhabitants of the state of Victoria. This school is thus called logically " Victoria" school;.
