There remains besides a locality of the " Camp of César" where a camp and fortifications were drawn up formerly. It is only about year 1.000 that one strictly speaking begins history of Normandy with in particular the first lords of the Earth of Villequier. The lord of Villequier was, moreover inter alia people, one of the knights who accompagnièrent Robert, Duc of Normandy out of Holy Land. The Earth of Villequier was thus a stronghold seigneurial where resided of many knights. Thereafter Villequier will be had by many families, of which the Cavelier family until the beginning of the 18th century. The commune that we know today was formed in 1823 by the meeting of the two old parishes of Villequier (" Villechier" at the 12th century) and of Bébec (" Buiébec" at the 12th century).Villequier, Villechier: Name anglo-Scandinavian like Orcher, in the past Aurichier. Old English welig: willow and of the anglo-Scandinavian kær: marshy depression. Both other Villequier (S) in France draw their name of a Norman lord, Aumont De Villequier.
One of the girls of Victor Hugo, Léopoldine, and her husband Charles Vacquerie drowned in the river in 1843. Married on February 15th of the same year, they disappear the next on September 4th and are buried in the same coffin and same the tombe. Contemplations , collection published by the poet in 1856, constitute a work of mourning in which the disappearance of the young couple occupies a central place, just as it is a caesura in the life of the author. This commune there is evoked and comprises today a museum dedicated to Victor Hugo in the Vacquerie house of the parents-in-law of Léopoldine.
