History
Inserted between the green and timbered hills which dominate the low valley of the Batch, Villeneuve has a long story, whose first chapters were written by the Romans on the site of the Excisum antique.
It is indeed there, with one kilometer of the current center town, with the crossroads of two great transportation routes which was set up a first urban core including/understanding camp of legionaries, artisanal districts, forum, curie, temples of which there remain to us some beautiful structures.
At the beginning of the 11th century, a Abbaye Bénédictin E is installed on the spot and groups around it a small village of potters and peasants. But Villeneuve still does not exist.
It is only between 1254 and 1263 that a Country house will be born, from will of Alphonse of Poitiers, brother of holy Louis, which will obtain Moine S of Eysses the transfer of grounds necessary to the construction of a city new, affluent of a charter of habits, or privileges, which in 46 articles defines its social life of it, economic and penal.
Its construction will obey in a plan well defined adoptee by all the country houses of the South-west of France: an orthogonal plan organized around a central place, originality of Villeneuve residing in its position at horse on the Batch.
This situation privileged in fact, at the time, one of the rare points of passage on the river, and will lead it to play a strategic part as of the first episodes of the One hundred year old war, at the time of the wars of religion, or when the queen Margot, avid of being able, tried to conquer the Agenais in vain by forcing the passage of Villeneuve (1585). Its role of place of war ended with the events of the Fronde. In this civil war which tore France, Villeneuve took the party of the Princes against Mazarin. The seat and the defeat which followed (it were one of the last to capitulate, 1653) cost him its ramparts, its ditches. No outstanding fact more disturbed its history. The Révolution of 1789 caused even no important movement there and the city wisely remained “revolutionist”.
It also contributes in spite of the decisions of the government to protect the environment indeed since October 20th 2005, the Communauté of communes of Villeneuvois uses pure Plant oil to make function its vehicles (10 heavy trucks of the service of collection of the household refuse), it is a first in France, where the legal statute of the containing hydrocarbon Plant oil is prone to Controverse. On this point, the C.C.V was based on the expertise of a lawyer to justify the legal aspect of the raw plant oils used like Carburant (cf the page on this subject).

From Auvergne descended Bois and Fromage S; Rouergue, the Copper and the Paper; Quercy, the Corn, the Wine and the Fruit S. All these food products forwarded by Villeneuve which, only with Cahors had a starter of commercial port. The boats set out again then on Bordeaux, then from there towards the French counters in the islands.
At the 19th century Villeneuve was especially known for its market-gardening products and its trade of the plum of graft: garden peas, French beans, Pruneau X left by whole trains towards the large markets Bordeaux and Paris. It is also a small diversified industrial center.

Spanning the Batch, the bridge old , or bridge of Cieutat, contemporary of the Bridge Valentré of Cahors, was at the 13th overcome century of three defensive towers. If the two southernmost arches date from the 13th century, the large arch located on the side of Right Bank was built with the XVIIe century, following degradations considered to be irreversible of the former arches. This new arch was thus designed in order to facilitate the dissipation of the current; the principal weakness of this work of art, conceived by English engineers little with the fact of the mode of water of the rivers of Aquitaine, lay indeed in its massivity which made an obstacle of it that the pressure of water degraded little by little.
The legend reports that three Bateau X descending the Batch were stopped with the foot of the old bridge by a mysterious force. One of the sailors having plunged to see what retained them, went up carrying a statuette of the virgin . It was then decided to build a Chapelle overhanging the place of the discovery. Since then, the statuette supervises the Rivière since the roof of the vault.
