Villefort is a common French, located in the department of the Lozere and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Villefortais.
Geography
Villefort, at the entry of the throats of the Proud , is a calm holiday resort of the Cevennes lozériennes. Located on the old way Regordane, with the foot of the Mount Lozere, stronghold of Châteauneuf de Randon, then barons of Tournel. Very tourist village during the summer period.The commune is served by the rail on the line the SNCF Nimes - Clermont-Ferrand where in particular passes celebrates it " Cévenol" (Line of the Cevennes).
History
Villefort was an important crossing point, disputed hard during the wars of religion. With the Revolution, Villefort joined the territory of old the Gévaudan to found current the Lozere.In the the Sixties (1965), the construction of the Bayard dam brought to the commune a new prosperity. The construction of the dam Villefort was however painful: indeed, the village close to Bayard was demolished before being absorbed by the floods of the Proud one.
