Villebois-Lavalette
Villebois-Lavalette is a common French, located in the department of the Charente and the area Poitou-Charentes.

History
Initially Gallo-Roman villa near to the Roman way which connected Périgueux to Saintes, Villebois became important a baronnie. Fulcher de Villebois at the 8th century, Hélie at the 10th century, Ithier at the 12th century were successively the lords of Villebois that which one finds the trace in the accounts of battles of the successive crusades. Indeed, a castle is attested into 988-1028 in Villebois. The count of Angouleme had the church Saint-Romain " in Castro Villaboensi " (A. Debord, the laic company in the countries of Charente , Paris, 1984, p. 144).Undoubtedly in August 1226, Villebois passes Lusignan, to counts of Angouleme who raise the current walls with their seven turns. Victim of several seats during the Guerre One hundred Year old Villebois was taken again with English in 1376 by the Duc of Berry, the brother of Charles V.
During the wars of religion Villebois was mainly destroyed.
The lords de Mareuil appear among the successive owners. In 1590, the Duke of Épernon, Jean-Louis de Nogaret of Valette made the seat of the castle where members of a league had cut off themselves. Eight years later, this last repurchases the castle (Jean-Paul Gaillard, Châteaux, home and old residences of Charente , Paris, 1993, p. 939 to 946). By letters patent of March 1622, this ground was set up in duchy and peerage from where the name of Villebois-Lavalette.
The young person Louis XIII remained there with his new wife Anne of Austria, invited by the duke of Epernon. It arrived on December 28th, 1615 by the way of the peaks. In 1662 the duke of Navailles far away from the court by Louis XIV withdrew himself in Villebois. He made shave the old fortress and built as from 1667 the castle of which there remains only the northern wing (Bulletin and memories of the archaeological and historical Company of Charente, 1911). With the site of the markets of the 12th century, it made build into 1665 the current markets (classified in 1948) while his wife founded the convent of the Ursulines on November 17th, 1665 (Jean Tautou, Histoire of Villebois and its castle , A.C.V.L., Villebois-Lavalette, p. 30).
Napoleon III returned to him his name of Villebois-Lavalette per imperial decree of August 16th, 1861.
The enclosure and the vault were classified on June 18th, 1915.
