Villars-les-Dombes

Villars-les-Dombes is a common French, located in the department of the Ain and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

The city is located in the southern part of the department of Ain, halfway between Lyon (33 km) and Borough-in-Bresse (29 km), in the middle of the area of the known Dombes for its many ponds favourable with the Pisciculture like for its ornithological park, the Parc of the birds.

History

The seigniory of Villars (attested in files at the date of 940) became, by marriage, seigniory of Thoire and Villars in 1188, and towards 1400 the capital was Trévoux. In 1565, Villars was set up in marquisat depend on the house of Savoy for the benefit of Honorat of Savoy.

In 1705, the marshal of Villars obtained the erection of several grounds, small French Enclave in the province of Franche-Comté, in duchy of Villars. Its posterity is extinct, in 1788, by the death of his/her son Honore-Armand, 2nd duke of Villars.
