Villach

Villach (in Slovenien: Beljak ) is the second town of Carinthie in the south of the Austria, located on the Drave ( Drau in German or Drava in Slovenien). It counts 57.646 inhabitants.

History

The oldest found traces of human activity with Villach go back to 3500 before J.C. Many vestiges Roman were discovered there. Villach has its first mayor at the 16th century. The January 25th 1348, a Earthquake destroys most of the city; it was followed of another destroying seism in 1690. It then occurs several fires in Villach which destroy many buildings. At the time of Napoleon, Villach is attached to the France. The city is taken again in 1813.

Villach is surrounded by the mountains of the the Alps where the Ski in winter and the Randonnée in summer are practiced. The city is at half an hour in the train or the car of the Italian border, and the Slovenien border.
