Villa Eugénie
The Villa Eugenie (famous Hotel of the Palate since 1893) is an old residence of summer of 1854 with Biarritz, Style Second Empire, built by the empress Eugenie (wife of the emperor Napoleon III) then transformed into de luxe hotel since 1893.
History
Villa estival built for the Eugenie empress starting from 1854 pennies direction of Louis-Auguste Couvrechef, Architect of the crown and the imperial field, and the architect Hippolyte-Louis Durand.In reference to the first name of the empress, it adopts the form of a E . Built in ten months as from 1854, it is inaugurated in 1855. It shelters sumptuous festivals then joining together the European Gotha.
Raised of a stage in 1867, the villa becomes property of the empress to dead of Napoleon III.
Eugenie sells it with the Banque Parisian Union in 1880. It is initially transformed into hotel-casino, the “Biarritz Palate”, then in hotel in 1893.
It is still an appointment of prestige which receives crowned heads, like the queen Victoria, or the empress Elizabeth of Austria (called Sissi).
Devastated by a fire on February 1st, 1903, the building was rebuilt, of 1903 to 1905, with an additional wing and becomes a luxury hotel of three hundred rooms.
The architect Edouard Niemans, author of this rebuilding, preserves the walls external by taking again the architectural party of the frontages of a style néo- Louis XIII.
The building is however very modern, builds in Reinforced concrete with a plated decoration. The interior decoration, in particular of the room of restaurant in rotunda, is designed by Niermans; the murals, on the topic of Jason and the Golden Fleece, are due to the painter Paul Gervais.
This days, this establishment is one of the most prestigious de luxe hotel of Biarritz and France whose decoration points out the records of the imperial couple.
