Vilcabamba

Vilcabamba , legendary “lost kingdom of Incas”, was the last refuge of Incas.

This kingdom corresponding to the current province located at the north of the Cuzco was the refuge of Manco INCA after the great rebellion of 1536. This broken area and glaze of a luxuriant vegetation offered an ideal refuge to the rebellious INCA. In the city of Vilcabamba, surrounded by its close relations, it tried to reconstitute an imperial court and a state reproducing the organization of Cuzco of before the conquest.

During the thirty-six years of subsistence of this small kingdom, the Peru did not know civil peace. With the fights between Spanish were added the raids incas and the risings orchestrated by Incas resistant.

Whatever was the true capacity of Incas rebels and their implication in the disorders of the country, exceeded Spanish, organized an ultimate forwarding in Vilcabamba in 1572. Those did not meet any opposition to their progression. They captured reigning the INCA last thus: Tupac Amaru . This one, although laid out with parlementer with the colonial capacity, was carried out as a public on the place of weapons of Cuzco, in front of a crowd in tears.

One is unaware of still today the real geographical position and the extent of the kingdom of Vilcabamba. However, concerning its capital, the archeologists direct themselves today towards the site of Choquequirao to the Peru.
