Viitasaari is a city mid-west of the Finland, in the area of Finland-Power station.

It is the commune of birth of Henrik Gabriel Porthan (1739 - 1804), Fennomane, professor with the royal Académie of Turku, first specialist in the Finnish history and founder of the first newspaper of the country.

Geography

It is by the total surface area the largest commune of the area. It is located in full heart of the area of the lakes, crossed by large the Lac Keitele, in the extreme north of the inland waterway Keitele- Päijänne. One does not find there relief marked, only of the Esker S and hills of low altitude.

The close municipalities are Äänekoski in the south, Kannonkoski and Kivijärvi in the west, Pihtipudas in north, Keitele and Vesanto in the east (and in Savonie of North).

The commune is crossed by main road 4 (E75) in the North-South direction and the west-east direction by the blue Route , tourist route come from Sweden and going until in Russia.

The economy is shared between agriculture (229 farms of an average surface of 24 hectares) and the forest (430 000 cubic meters of wood annually cut, covers 74% of the territory of the commune).
