Vienna (Isere)

Vienna is a common French, located in the department of the Isere and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Its inhabitants is called the Vienneses.

Geography

Vienna is located in the department of Isere at the edge of the the Rhone at 30 km at the south of Lyon. It extends on left bank (in the east) from the Fleuve, opposite Saint-Romain-in-Gall and of Holy-Dove, with the confluence of the Rhone and the Gère.

The first men seem to be appeared on the Neolithic site of Vienna at the time (3000-2500 av. J. - C. approximately). A first habitat was thus discovered with the slope Sainte-Hélène , in the district of Estressin. Another habitat probably dating from the same period was updated in the district of Charavel, not far from there. The Bronze Age was also pilot for him of a strong human activity in what will become the town of Vienna as we show it the very many objects going back to this time discovered in the area Viennese (swords and ceramics in particular). A council took place in 1311 and its bishop carried the title of Primat of Gaules until in 1802.

It benefits the XIXe century from the Industrial revolution and becomes a working city, with in particular of many factories of textile, which accommodate after the First World War strong a Armenian community.

After having suffered from disindustrialization since the end of the year 1950, the city tries to turn to the tertiary sector and tourist and cultural promotion.

Vienna is especially known from now on for its annual festival of Jazz in July (Jazz in Vienna), created in 1981 (in 1980, only one night ago of the blues), which is held in particular within the majestic framework of the ancient theater.

  • Valentinien II (371-392), Roman Emperor born in Vienna.

  • GUI of Burgundy, archbishop of Vienna, (1050 - 1124), elected pope under the name of Calixte II in 1119.
  • François Ponsard, (1814 - 1867), dramatic poet, elected with the French Academy on March 22nd, 1855. A statue in its honor rises besides on the boulevard Eugene Arnaud, in front of the Sous-préfecture.
  • Lucien Hussel, (1889 - 1967), mayor (SFIO) of the city enters the two world wars (1931-1940) then after the Release (1944-1959), one of the rare deputies to have refused to vote the full powerss with Pétain in 1940.
  • Fernand Not, cook, one of the French chiefs most recognized in the the Thirties. Its restaurant, the Pyramid, becomes the point of required passage of all the national and international personalities which descend the Valley from the Rhone. The Pyramid currently counts a young chief of national reputation, with Patrick Henriroux.
  • Louis Mermaz, (1931 -), mayor (PS) of the town of 1971 to 2001, currently senator. Former deputy, former president of the general advice of Isere, former president of the National Assembly, former minister…
  • Monseigneur d' Aviau, archbishop of Vienna then of Bordeaux.
  • Eve Angeli (of her true name Vanessa Garcin), star of the French song, lived part of its youth in the area Viennese.

Teaching

  • the College Ponsard, built in full heart of the historical city, was created like college of the Jésuites at the 17th century. It carries, as of 1914, the name of François Ponsard (1814-1867), poet playwright, member of the French Academy, born in Vienna.

Economy

Vienna is the seat of the Chamber of commerce and industry North-Isere. It manages the commercial river port of Southern Vienna as well as the Aéroport of Vienna Reventin.

Events

  • the Rhone celebrates of it: annual festival with demonstrations on the topic of the Rhone: music , choir singing and folk dances .

  • Jazz in Vienna : annual festival at the beginning of the summer during two weeks in the Roman theater. Festival which gathers stars international of the Jazz. There remains the greatest jazz festival of France the summer as well as Montreux or North Sea Jazz Festival. Every evening, in the concerts takes place on this occasion with the ancient theater, larger Roman theater of Europe. During the day, other concerts (free) take place in various places of the Country Viennese, of which the garden of Cybèle to Vienna.
