Video System Home

The English expression Video Home System (video system domesticates), more known under its acronym VHS , indicates a standard of recording of signals Vidéo S on magnetic band of 1/2 inch which was developed by JVC at the end of the Années 1970. The duration of recording of the cassettes marketed in this format can be 2 a.m. (E-120 cassette), 3 hours (E-180), 4 hours (E-240) and even 5 hours (E-300). It should be noticed that the tape motion is faster with the format American NTSC. Of this fact the duration of the cassettes sold in the United States is weaker, between 2:00 (T-120) and 3:30 (T-210). But certain video tape recorders with format NTSC can record and read with half speed (SP), or even with the third tape speed (EP or SLP) of the band, thus multiplying by 2 or 3 the duration (until 10:30 with T-210). In Europe, the duration can be carried by the same system until 12:00 with a cassette E-240 (15h with E-300). This increase in duration is obviously made with the detriment quality.

Characteristics

It was the most common standard for the video family through the whole world. Its use is limited to the broad diffusion and the recording of the television programs for the private individuals. Now its successor the DVD is the standard used.

In the Years 1980, VHS was essential like the standard of the video general public vis-a-vis its competitors: the Betamax of Sony and the V2000 of Philips.

VHS offers a numerical quality of image quite lower than the supports, the first generations had a mono sound with a weak signal-to-noise report/ratio and a bad band-width. The contribution of the mode Hi-Fi stereo made it possible to profit from a sound of better quality. This standard remains still 30 years after its creation because it has two advantages: its universality and its price.

Alternatives

Various alternatives exist, certain really not having never been marketed:
  • VHS : standard version.
  • VHS-HQ : high-quality, corresponds to the current Magnétoscope S.
  • VHS Hi-fi : its recorded under the video, in Frequency modulation and stereo.
  • VHS-C : alternative with compact cassette for the Camescope S. Of the adapters make it possible to read the cassettes with the compact format in the video tape recorders of living room.
  • S-VHS : Super-VHS, image improved by an increase of the definition (400 lines instead of 240 out of STAKE) as well as a better treatment of the signal: the Brightness and the Chrominance are recorded and, if possible, are transmitted separately (format S-Video or Y/C). The treatment of the sound takes again the specifications of VHS Hi-Fi .
  • S-VHS-C : combination of the two precedents.
  • W-VHS : version High-definition, supports also it video in relief (3D).
  • D-VHS : numerical version, up to 21 hours of recording on a cassette.
  • D-Theater : preregistered cassettes of type D-VHS sold since 2002 in the United States. The films are encodés with the format 720p and 1080i. These cassettes can be read only by video tape recorders D-VHS carrying the logo D-Theater.

The changing

With the appearance of recordable DVD and apparatuses making it possible to record programs televised on Hard drive, VHS declines in the Années 2000.
