Like its contemporary close relation Wilhelm Furtwängler, of Sabata the composition regarded as more important than the direction of orchestra and yet it has receipt a better recognition as leader. Some critical see in Sabata a rival of Toscanini for the title of larger Italian leader of the 20th century.

Its principal compositions

  • It macigno (opera, 1917)

Its principal recordings

Its recordings in studio are generally regarded as less interesting than those which were carried out in operas or concert halls. (That holds can be with the fact that one says of him that he hated the recordings).

Fortunately, there exist several recordings " live " who show how much Sabata could be filling with enthusiasm on scene (although the quality of these recordings is sometimes problematic).

This contrast appears well in the two versions of Mort and transfiguration of Richard Strauss and the Requiem of Verdi enumerated below.
