Victor Vasarely
Victor Vasarely , of his true name Vásárhelyi Győző (April 9th 1906 - March 15th 1997) is an artist often recognized like the father of COp art.
Born with Pécs in Hungary, it followed a formation in Médecine but left it at the end of two years.
It was interested then in the abstract art and teaching of the Bauhaus in Muhély of Budapest.
It left to settle with Paris with the beginning of the year thirty, working as an artist graphic designer. It is here that it carried out its first major work, Zebra , regarded today as the first work in the kind COp art. During the two following decades, Vasarely developed its own model of geometrical abstract art, working in various Matériau X but employing a minimal number of forms and colors. Its work was worth its international repute to him and it received several prestigious prices.
It creates for that, in 1976, the architectonic center in Aix-en-Provence and three “didactic” museums Vasarely, with Gordes (1970), with Pécs (1976) and in Budapest (1986).
He dies with Paris the March 15th 1997 at the 91 years age.
The museum Vasarely de Pécs contains an important collection of its work, as well as that of much of other artists of Hungarian origin who worked abroad.
He is the father of the artist Yvaral, who produced works in the same style and the grandfather of Pierre Vasarely, his legatee.
