Victor II or Gebhard de Dollnstein-Hirschberg (1018 - July 28th 1057) was a German Pape . Its name means in Latin gaining it .
Victor II was born in 1018 (approximately) under the name of family Gebhard in Bavaria (more exactly, it is of origin Souabe).
It is the son of the count Hartwig of Calw and of the contess Baliza . He became the count de Dollnstein, of Tollenstein and Hirschberg (Dollnstein being a city in the district of Eichstätt).
It is on the insistence of his/her uncle Gebhard III (bishop of Ratisbon), that Victor II was introduced, the day of Christmas 1042, with Henri III to be bishop of Eichstätt. The emperor initially hesitated because Gebhard was only 24 years old. But on the council of a Roman delegation to which belonged the old archbishop Bardo of Mainz and Hildebrand (future Gregoire VII), he finally granted his nomination. Gebhard proved to be a good bishop and a careful statesman.
In this position, it supported the interests of Henri III. It became one of its narrowest advisers thereafter besides.
It is at the 37 years age, the April 13rd 1055, which he was elected pope.
At the beginning of his pontificate, Victor II showed obviously a devoted partisan of the imperial policy. He was with Rome since the end of 1055, when, as of the autumn 1056, he turned over in Germany to ask the protection of the Emperor against the Normands, that he presented like “new Buckwheats”. He managed to reconcile Henri III with Godefroid, duke of Lorraine.
After having governed imperial funerals on October 28th, Victor II was, the next on November 5th, the principal craftsman of the election of the young person wire of Henri III as emperor, under the name of Henri IV, and set up the regency of Agnès of Aquitaine, widow of the emperor. The importance of the role which it continued to hold in other political matters of the area, could make say of Victor II who he was more chancellor of the Saint Worsens Roman Germanic that chief of the Roman Catholic church.
It died out with Arezzo the July 28th 1057, after a 2 years, 3 months and 10 days pontificate. It was buried in S. Maria Rotonda of Ravenne.
