Resistance 2nd World war

He belonged to the 80 members of Parliament (Eighty) (including 7 of the Finistere) which refused to give the full powerss to the marshal Pétain while saying not to the bill of July 10th, 1940.

Its opposition to the mode continued. It accepted initially that its municipal council was altered by the Vichy government and it multiplied the calls to calm to prevent that the population was not victim of reprisals on behalf of the German authorities. It entered in increasingly open conflict with the capacity and finishes, since 1941, by being revoked for 3 months on December 30th, 1941 of its functions of mayor of Brest to have refused to vote a motion of confidence in Pétain.

Report/ratio of the prefect of the area of Rennes of December 22nd, 1941 (Mr. Ripert):

In Finistere " the heart of the résistance" seem to be Mr. Gorgeu, Maire of Brest, former senator towards whom all the eyes are turned.
If it posts the portrait of the Pétain Marshal in the room of the municipal council, it estimates not to have to go until putting it in its personal cabinet. It in addition is decided to abstain from if the members of the municipal council proposed a motion of confidence to the Marshal.
the attitude of Mr. Gorgeu conxx X of those of all the former members of Parliament of the area.
has my opinion the key of the National Revolution in Finistere rests on the Mayor of Brest. The only difficulty comes from the absence of man to replace Mr. Gorgeu but I estimate that if the Mayor of Brest refused to vote a motion addressing personally to the Marshal, its replacement would be essential of very required.

From this time it had to leave Brest and went to live in Crosmières small village of the Sarthe in the family of the wife of her son Victor Leon Gorgeu.

It engaged then in the fight clandestine and joined the civil Organization and soldier in at the beginning of 1943, responsible for the administrative organization of Brittany. So it was in connection with the Northern movement Libération. It is had a presentiment of in June 1943 by the National committee of Resistance for the functions of regional Police chief of the Republic in Rennes; the de Gaulle General names it in October 1943 his representative for the area Brittany.

During periodic rounds in Brittany, it deals with the organization of the Committees of release of the departments of the Island and Vilaine, of the Coast of North, Finistere, of Morbihan, committees which it installs in January 1944.

Warned on February 2nd, 1944 that he was denounced with the Gestapo and Darnand, fled in Paris then had to hide in various residences as from this date all while maintaining the contacts with the central organizations of Resistance.

It joined its station with Rennes on May 15th, 1944, in accordance with the received instructions, to prepare the takeover there. With the first American shells which fall on Rennes on August 1st, it settles in its functions of Police chief on August 4th to the release of Rennes, functions which it exerts until March 31st, 1946, following the resignation of the de Gaulle General. Two major difficulties arise to him: to manage purification and the supply. It has as a principal private secretary Henri Fréville, future Senator Maire of Rennes.

This engagement was worth to him to be decorated with the Médaille of Resistance to the Libération.

The Police chiefs of the Republic were attached directly to the de Gaulle general and had all legislative power and executive, including the right of reprieve, while waiting for that the state reorganizes. This organization was installation in order to prevent that France was controlled by American through AMGOT like was Germany.

It enters to the Council of State in 1947.
