Victor Brachelet

French politician and Communist militant.

Biography

Born in 1883, This wine merchant takes part precociously in the political life. It becomes at twenty-nine years mayor of Somain in 1912, seat which it preserves until 1939. Mobilized and wounded (mutilation) during the First World War, it is a figure of minority favorable in 1919 to adhesion with the Internationale Communist within the socialist federation SFIO of the Northern . The nomination of the socialist party for the legislative elections of 1919 escapes to him from little vis-a-vis Leon Escoffier, Douai-native lawyer supported by the majority with the head of the party in the department. After the scission of the Congress of Turns, it is the principal organizer of the Communist party in the area of Douai during the years 1920 and sits in the local instances and regional. Its local influence opens to him the doors of the General advice in 1932. However, it is disputed by young militants who reproach him his ideological flexibility. In 1930, it is blamed by the ray of Douai and the regional committee with the pretext of the organization of a festival of qualified music of “middle-class woman”. In spite of this disgrace, it remains within the movement but immediately after the signature of the Pacte germano-Soviet in September 1939 leaves it. After an active participation in the Resistance, it finds its armchair of mayor of Somain in 1945 with the support of SFIO in spite of the sharp opposition of the Communists. He dies in 1953.
