Victor Basch

Victor Basch (Budapest, 1863 - close to Lyon in the Ain January 10th 1944), Philosopher and university French of Austrian Jewish origin. Arrived in France as of childhood, it makes its higher learning with the Sorbonne. He teaches then and is Professor of German and Esthétique at the university of Nancy. He is then professor of philosophy to Rennes.

Anticonformist Socialist, it fought for Dreyfus and the Spanish revolutionists. In 1898, Victor Basch is the cofounder, with Ludovic Trarieux and Lucien Herr, of the Ligue of the Human rights, he is the fourth president in 1926. He is very early opposed to the rise Nazism in Germany. The January 10th 1944, it is stopped in its residence and is assassinated with his wife Ilona (Helene) by the French Milice of Lyon directed by Paul Touvier on order of the Nazis. On its body, the militiamans wrote: " the Jew pays toujours".

Its name was given to many streets, schools or colleges in France. In Paris, a place of the 14 {{E}} district is baptized place Victor and Helene Basch since 1992, it was previously called place Victor Basch by decree of the December 18th 1944. With Montrouge (92), a street is allotted to him.
