Vice-presidency of Burundi

The station of Vice-président of Burundi was created in June 1998 with the coming into effect of the transitory constitution. It replaces the post of Prime Minister.

Interim period (1998 - 2001)

Pierre Buyoya, which had already directed the country of 1987 to 1993, seized the power in 1996 following a coup d'etat and, once instituted President the June 11th 1998, named with the vice-presidency Frederic Bamvuginyumvira (of the Front for the democracy of Burundi) and Mathias Sinamenye of UPRONA. In accordance with the constitution of transition, the first vice-president was in charge of the political matters and administrative, the second of the economic and social matters.

Transition (2001 - 2005)

A new transition government took its functions on November 1st 2001 with Buyoya as President and Domitien Ndayizeye like single vice-president. At the end of the transitional period of 18, Buyoya passed the capacity to Ndayizeye which named Alphonse-Marie Kadege with the vice-presidency. Kadege was replaced in November 2004 by Frederic Ngenzebuhoro.

New Constitution

The new Constitution of Burundi, adopted in referendum the February 28th 2005, envisages two posts of vice-president, an Hutu and Tutsi, distributed as under the interim period (political matters and administrative on a side, economic and social of the other). The nominations must be approved by the two rooms of the Parliament.

The August 29th, President Pierre Nkurunziza named Martin Nduwimana and Alice Nzomukunda, which accepted the downstream of the Parliament and was immediately sworn in. September 5th, 2006, Alice Nzomukunda resigns of her post of vice-president to protest against the fraud and the violations of the human rights. She is replaced by Marina Barampama on September 7th. Following quarrels between the pro-Nkurunziza and pro Radjabu within the CNDD-FDD, Marina Barampama is replaced on February 12th, 2007 by Gabriel Ntisezerana.
