Belgium

The rank of vice-admiral is the third highest rank of the general officers of the maritime component of Belgian defense. It corresponds to the guard Vice-amiral of squadron French.

Canada

In the marine of the Canadian Armed forces, the rank of vice-admiral correspond to that of Lieutenant-general in the army and the aviation of the Canadian Forces. This rank says Vice Admiral in English.

The abbreviation of the term is " Vam" and one addresses oneself to him by saying " amiral".

History

The dignity of vice-admiral exists since the Moyen-âge. Its function is to assist the admiral, who is not in the beginning a military officer, but the chief of any legal and administrative organization related on the sea and the coasts. There exist many vice-admirals, under the dependence of the admirals: vice-admiral of France, creates by holy Louis, charged with the coasts of Picardy and Normandy under the authority of the Admiral de France, vice-admiral of Brittany under the authority of his admiral, vice-admiral of Guyenne, vice-admiral of Poitou and Saintonge, both pennies the authority of the admiral de Guyenne and vice-admiral of Provence under the authority of the admiral of the Seas of Raising.

Starting from second half of the 16th century, the admiralty of Brittany is attached to the office of governor of the province and the vice-admiral disappears. The admiral of France, and by consequence the vice-admiral, still has at the 16th century some prerogatives nomination maritime decisions. In 1627, Richelieu amalgamates admiralties of France, Provence and Guyenne, in an office of '' large-Master and general superintendent of navigation and trade of France ''. In the same way the vicies-admiralty are amalgamated in an office of general intendant of navigation and trade of France .

In 1669, the dignity of admiral de France is recreated, with all the regional admiralties (except for Brittany) joined together in it. In the same way are created two vice-admirals, one known as of Raising, for the Mediterranean, the other known as of the West, for the Atlantic. In 1778 east creates an office of vice-admiral of the seas of Asia and America for Charles Henri d' Estaing and in 1784 another of vice-admiral of the seas of India for the baillif de Suffren. Whereas the admiral of France ordered with the sea only in extremely rare cases, the vice-admirals were truths military chiefs, promoted for their merits and component in fact the top of the maritime hierarchy. The office of vice-admiral was removed in 1791.

A many navy of the world uses to indicate one their ranks of officer general a translatable term by " vice-amiral". In the Danish navy ( Viceadmiral ), allemande ( vizeadmiral ), American Dutchwoman ( vice-admiraal ), Norwegian ( viseadmiral ), British and ( Vice Admiral ), this rank is the third of the rank of general officer. In the Spanish marines ( vicealmirante ) and Portugueses ( vice-almirante ), it is the second rank of general officer. In all this navy, the badge of this rank consists of one gallon broad accompangé of two gallons simple.
