History
The Castle of Vianden
The first traces of construction of the castle of Vianden go up about the middle of the 5th century of our era. Its construction started thus at the time Roman and continued at the time Carolingian. The majority of the buildings was set up between the 11th century and the 14th century. The castle knew many modifications, one counts nine different architectural times, of the 5th century at our days. Since 1977, it is Luxembourg state-owned property which restores it in the respect of the historical forms.
Armorial bearings of Vianden
The armorial bearings of Vianden appear among oldest in Luxembourg.
The armorial bearings more the known hurdy-gurdies of the counts de Vianden date from XIIIe century and were mouths with the money escutcheon. In 1288 Godefroid 1st adopted new armorial bearings based on those of the family of Perweys, (his/her mother was Perwey), which were related to the Dukes of the Brabant.
The armorial bearings of Perweys are thus identical to the armorial bearings of Vianden.
Since their attribution in 1696 by the King of France, and confirmed later to 19th by the King of the Netherlands, Vianden always raised the same armorial bearings.
