Viana C Castelo

Viana C Castelo is a municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Viana C Castelo and the Northern area.

Geography

Viana C Castelo is bordering:

in north, of Caminha,
in the east, of Laying of Lima,
in the south, of Barcelos and Esposende.

The municipality has moreover a maritime frontage, in the west, on the Atlantic Ocean.

History

The city received its first charter in 1258, granted by the king Alphonse III. It bore the name of Viana da Foz C Lima until in 1848, date on which a decree of the queen Marie II gave him the current name at the same time as the row of “city was recognized to him”.

The city knew a glorious past, thanks to its strong maritime tradition, and in particular by the existence of shipyards.

Roads: Connected by the IC28 (Arcos de Valdevez) to the east and connected by A27 (Oporto) to the South and north by A28 which connects until Caminha.

Monuments

One can admire his “ there; crowned cœur ”, the sanctuary of Santa Luzia, holy owner of the eyes.

Economy

The municipal economy is based in fishing, repair and naval construction, port activities, agro-pastoral, sylviculture, food industry, detailing trade, public services and deprived (panel and insurances) and in tourism (restoration and hotel trade), being still detached the role from the local government.

Inheritance

The inheritance builds more significant includes the seat (century XV, modified in centuries XVIII and XIX), the sanctuary of Luzia Saint (of century XX, the românico-bizantino), the Mercy (with splendid faience manufacture), the tower of Roqueta, the paços of the commune (all the two medieval ones), the palate of Távoras (of century XVI), the castle of the Bar (of century XVII), the vault of the house of the Place (of the period baroque), the bridge (of century XIX, built by the engineers of Eiffel), and the citânia of Luzia Saint. The Atlantic littoral and Rio Lima constitute the elements most significant of the natural heritage.
