Eugene Sweats , born the January 26th 1804 with Paris and died in exile the August 3rd 1857 with Annecy (Haute-Savoie), is a writer French.
It is mainly known for two of its serialized stories in social matter: Mysteries of Paris (1842-1843) and the Jew wandering (1844 - 1845).
Youth
His/her father, Jean-Joseph Sweats wire, was surgeon of the guard of Napoleon 1 {{er}}, its godmother was not other than Joséphine and her godfather Eugene de Beauharnais. He studied with the Lycée Condorcet. Young jet set for the future writer who however will appear a poor and turbulent pupil, then an young man whose escapades défraient the chronicle. His/her father sends it on a journey to give it on the right way: Forwarding of Spain (1823), then of Greece, then in the Antilles.Dandy, traveller, he inherits at 26 years paternal fortune, becomes the lover of the more beautiful women of Paris (he is called the Beau Known ), very adheres to the snob Jockey Club as of his creation in 1833. He wastes the fortune of his father in seven years, and starts to write when he is ruined.
Literary work
Eugene Sue is the author, according to what the bibliography drawn up by Francis Lacassin reports, of seven exotic and maritime novels, eleven social novels, ten historical novels, fifteen other social novels (of which a series entitled Seven deadly sins ), two collections of news, eight works political, nineteen theatrical works (comedy, light comedy, drama) and six various works.Dandy with the easy feather, it converts with the Socialisme and written the Mysteries of Paris . Its publication in novel is refused by Gosselin and it is published in serial in the Newspaper of DEBATEs and arouses an enormous interest in all the layers of the company, and even abroad. That influenced its personal life - he is elected appointed the Seine - and its literary orientation. It inspires, at the next century, the series the New Mysteries of Paris to Léo Malet.
It publishes then the Jew wandering , also in serial in Constitutional the .
One starts with better recognizing the interest of the Mystères of the people , historical fresco and policy of which the tone is given by its epigraph: “It is not a religious, political or social reform, that our fathers were not forced to conquer century in century, at the price of their blood, by the insurrection. ” It is censured by the Second Empire.
The project goes back to the months which followed the failure of the revolution of 1848. And, in November 1849, Maurice Lachâtre, his friend and editor, on sale put the first deliveries of the Mystères of the people , using with this intention a system of development of consumer loyalty by premiums and a distribution by the post office, which allowed to thwart the censure. In spite of these precautions, the publication was stopped on several occasions, put at L Index by Rome, condemned by the bishops of France and worried by the police force.
It was completed only in 1857, but at the time when the edition could be completed, 60.000 specimens were seized. The shock was such as it worsened the health condition of the novelist who, sick and exiled, succumbed. In spite of its disappearance, the court condemned the printer and the editor, and it ordered the seizure and the destruction of the work.
Policy
He was appointed republican and Socialiste of the the Seine. When Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte carried out his coup d'etat, it had to flee in 1851, and to be exiled.
It was accommodated in the States of Savoy even if the local clergy opposed its arrival. In fact, the king Victor-Emmanuel II and his chief of the government, Massimo d' Azeglio, are favorable to the liberal ideas. It ends up settling with Annecy-the-Old man where it lived there of 1851 until his death in 1857.
