Via Turonensis
The via Turonensis (or Tours sees) is the Latin name of one of the four ways of France of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle, more in north. It leaves the Tour Saint-Jacob to Paris, then crosses Orleans, Tours, Poitiers, Bordeaux. At the stage of Ostabat, it is joined by the Via Lemovicensis and the Via Podiensis, on the level of the Carrefour of Gibraltar. It crosses the Spanish border by the Col of Roncevaux where it takes the name of Camino navarro. It meets the Via Tolosane with Puente Reina and, starting from this stage, carries on its road until Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle under the name of Camino frances.
History
In the chapter first of sound Guide of the Pilgrim (12th century), Aimery Picaud describes it via Turonensis thus:“There are four roads which, driving in Saint-Jacob, meet into only one with Puente Reina, in Spanish territory; ……, another still passes by Saint Martin's day de Tours, Saint-Hilaire of Poitiers, Saint-Jean-with Angély, Saint-Eutrope the Holy ones and the town of Bordeaux. ”
Gathering with Paris the pilgrims of Saint-Jacob (or Jacquet S ) come from north and the North-East from Europe, “main road of Saint-Jacob” gained, by Orleans or Chartres, celebrates it sanctuary of Saint Martin's day de Tours which was worth to him the name of via Turonensis .
It is medieval church Saint-Jacques-of-The-Butchery in Paris which left the million pilgrims in direction of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle. At the beginning of Paris, Saint-Jacob de Montrouge opened the road of Stamps.
After Poitou, liked Aimery Picaud, and the Romance wonders of the churches of Saintonge, the heroes epic took again life with the sanctuaries of Bordeaux, Blaye and Belin, giving to the jacquets the force to face the arid crossing of the Moors and the heights of the Col of Roncevaux, to reach the ground of the Jacques apostle finally and to join, via Pampelune, the Camino francés with Puente Reina.
