Via Lemovicensis

The via Lemovicensis (or way limousine or way of Vézelay ) is the Latin name of one of the four ways of France of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle. It passes by Limoges, from where its name but its starting gathering place and is the abbey of the Madeleine to Vézelay. She crosses the country of stage in stage to the Basque village of Ostabat, where she amalgamates with the Via Turonensis. The way passes on its first section by Bourges and Chateauroux. There exists however an alternative more in the south by Nevers.

History

Come from Belgium, of the the Ardennes, Lorraine or Champagne, the Pilgrim of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle, also called jacquets, of via Lemovicensis gathered in Burgundy, around Romance splendors of the Madeleine of Vézelay.

Gathered in the Holy Father or Asquins, the latter then had the choice between two routes: by the Charity-on-Loire, Bourges and Chateauroux, or by Nevers, Saint-Pierre-the-Moûtier and Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre.

By Nevers or the cathedral of Bourges, filled up glare of its coloured stained glasses, it via Lemovicensis entered to the Limousin, from which it bears the name, to reach celebrates it sanctuary of Léonard Saint, expensive with Aimery Picaud.

After Périgueux, once crossed the Dordogne and the Garonne, the crossing so much dreaded of the Landes was relatively short by this way, which joined it via Turonensis and it via Podiensis with the crossroads of Gibraltar close to Ostabat.

Ways of Jacques Saint

According to the Chapter First of the Guide of the Pilgrim of Aimery Picaud, four roads lead to Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle:

The three first meet in Ostabat, then cross the Pyrenees by the Col of Roncevaux. They meet with Puente Reina, in Spanish territory, the fourth which crosses the Pyrenees by the Col of Somport. From there only one way leads to Saint-Jacob, the Camino frances.

The information of the Guide of the Pilgrims is quite summary, with each one to make its way. Nowadays, the beaconing allows a better preparation of the voyage. Other ways supplement those already described:

In France:

  • Via Domitia - Way of Compostelle

  • Way of Piedmont
  • Way of Aquitanian Littoral Soulac

From there, the way continues in Spain under the name of Camino navarro until Puente Reina. It is with this stage that the fourth way, the Tolosane (Arles, Toulouse), which crosses the Spanish border by the Col of Somport, joined it and which both amalgamate.

The four ways left France do not do of them from now on more but one and the continuous road towards Santiago under the name of Camino Francés.
