Vezin-the-Vain is a common French, located in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine and the area Brittany. The city belongs to the agglomeration of Rennes.

Geography

Origin of the name of the commune

Vezin is of Celtic origin derived from Guezen which meant “planted place of trees”. This term changed in Verezen (cherry tree) then in Vezin. Formerly the commune was abundantly planted cherry trees. Following the problems of distribution of mail at the time of the First World War (there exist at least four “Vezin” on the French territory), the Prefect asks the elected officials to choose a possessive phrase. The commune is called then Vezin Under Rennes, then Vezin the Vain one, by decree of December 6th, 1920.
