Vexillum

The vexillum is a standard or Drapeau, square roll of material attached by the top to a horizontal cross-piece, like the banners of our churches, in opposition to the sign (signum), which was only one surmounted pole of the image of an eagle, of a horse, etc the vexillum was always the single and particular sign of the Roman cavalry .
