Vevey is a common Suisse of the Canton of Vaud, located in the District of Vevey, of which it is the Chef-lieu.

Geography

Vevey is located at the edge of the Lac Léman, on the Riviera of Vaud with the foot of the Préalpes.

History

Already with, a lake station on Piloti S was installed in Vevey.

At the time Roman, a locality bearing the name of Vibiscum was created. Vevey is one of the stages of the Via Francigena, way of driving pilgrimage to Rome. It is mentioned for this reason by Sigéric, in 990, with the mention LIII Vivaec (number of stage on the basis of Rome).

During the feudal time, Vevey is under the sovereignty of the chapter of Lausanne, then of the house of Blonay. Then, a common bailliage with Chillon was instituted by the mode Bernese.

After the Revolution of Vaud of 1798, known Vevey one boom, during which public edifices left ground: Grenette, hospital, museums.

During the 19th century, the construction industries mechanical (workshops mechanics of Vevey), chocolate, dried milk (Nestlé) and manufactured tobacco (Rinsoz & Ormond) were created.

Since 1998, the concept Vevey, Ville of Images is developed to clarify the multitude of companies and institutions related on the image and the visual communication which work on the cultural and economic level on Riviera of Vaud. The Vevey Foundation, Town of Images, equipped with a structure of fontionnement light, are created in 1999. The purpose of it is to set up a strategy aiming to develop and coordinate all the initiatives related to the image, as well on the cultural level as economic and tourist.

  • Swiss Museum of the camera: in 1971, Vevey accommodates a great retrospective exposure of the history of photography around the famous collection of Michel Auer. Its success gives the idea to create the Swiss museum of the camera. Founded by Claude-Henry Forney, it is opened with the public in 1979 in a Grande apartment located Place 5 and moves in 1989 in a building of the 18th century located at the Lane of the Old-Ditches, restored by the architect H. Fovanna and arranged by S. and D. Tcherdyne, muséographes. The choice of the Lane of the Old-Ditches was related to the existence of a historical underpass, joining the close building located on the Great Place, and authorizing a future extension of the institution. This one was carried out in 2001, under the direction of the architect Joel Brönnimann. The Swiss Museum of the camera is an institution depending on the Town of Vevey and profits from the support from Association from the friends from the Swiss Museum from the camera as well as Foundation from the same name.   • Museum Jenisch which joins together the Museum of the Art schools and the cantonal Cabinet of the Prints. In this last is the Funds Pierre Decker, with an exceptional whole of engravings Dürer and Rembrandt. Created in 1987 per Olda Kokoschka, widow of the artist, the Foundation Oskar Kokoschka gathers more than 800 works. The Collection of Art Nestlé is also deposited with the museum.
